Social media has for the last decade and over become the platform for people to vent and rant. On Wednesday night when England took Croatia on in the semi fnal of the World Cup, it was a massive occasion for Ghanaians.
Ghanaians may not have been at the World Cup but picking sides at the Mundial was not difficult at all.And so when England played in only their third semi final game against Croatia, we followed with keen interest.
After 5 minutes into the game, it looked like England were going to romp over Croatia. But then after Kieran Trippier’s goal, it seemed as if the Three Lions just wanted to hold on till the end.
England receded, largely falling on long balls and a few chances far between each other. Croatia played like a side that had not gone through 120 minutes in each of their previous two games before Wednesday night.
And then time rolled on. And then Croatia got back on level terms in the second half through Ivan Perisic.
It never really looked like the next goal was going to come from England. And this perhaps was evidence that there was a gap in footballing experience that was skewed against England. Croatia looked dangerous.
Ghanaians on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook, wrote of their emotions a thousand times over as the game went into extra time.
We cannot confidently say if there was more supporters than haters of England in Ghana on the night. However on the night, the buzz created around every EnglandWorld Cup team seemed obvious on the cyberspace.
When Mandzukic scored on the stroke of minute 109, the posts started kicking in fast and funny. Some however, of farewell.
Playing on a recently popular meme, Twitter user @bbellgamhad this to say:
Mandzukic said I should tell you its not coming home. pic.twitter.com/OXpk2imojm

This Croatian team is an archetypal Eastern European team. Mental fortitude and physical strength is their forte. You name the sport; tennis, boxing, football etc. They just won't go away and will keep coming at you till they get an opening. #WorldCup

To be honest, this English team has been magnificent. Not many expected them to get this far. They played some good football and can walk with their heads up high. Congratulations England. Well fought. #worldcup
