An unhappy Mahama Ayariga has stated that he will be taking some of the public tertiary education institutions in Ghana to court over what he has described as “exorbitant” and “hiked” fees.

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central has issued an ultimatum to these universities over unapproved hikes in fees towards the next semester.

According to Mahama Ayariga, the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of parliament has not approved some of these said charges and were thus illegal to be paid by university students.

Speaking with the Accra-based radio station, Joy FM, Mr. Ayariga stated that if the universities would not reverse the hikes, he would turn to Ghana’s legal system to seek a solution. In line with the legislator’s assertions, the University Students Association of Ghana has called on all member students to desist from paying the said hikes.

They urged all students in Ghana to wait until parliament approves the new fees before paying. University of Ghana This has culminated in a unified call for a slash in fees charged by some universities in Ghana.

According to some student bodies across Ghana, there are tertiary institutions charging as much as GHS2,000. The Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Prempeh has thus called on all universities to submit their current fees for scrutiny and approvaL
