I Feel Your Pains My People – Mahama Comments On Electricity Crisis


For everyone’s information, the ECG Billing Crisis bothers the president as much as every other Ghanaian.

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to ensure a speedy and sustainable solution to the electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) billing irregularities suffered by Ghanaians in recent times.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) late last year effected an increase of 59.2 percent and 67.2 percent for electricity and water tariffs respectively


Following the increments, both businesses and individuals have protested in different ways against the sky-rocketed increase. There have also been variations in the ECG prepaid bills resulting to ridiculous billings.

It was the ECG billing crisis that motivated the protest at ECG office in Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region where residents threatened to beat up the staff if nothing is done about their bills.

The president took to social media to express his discomfort on the issue. “I share the frustration of Ghanaians affected by this anomalous situation and will do everything possible to find a speedy and sustainable solution to this issue,”he posted on Facebook.

Mahama also revealed in his post that Cabinet has approved the Inter-Agency Taskforce put together to resolve complaints from the public as regards irregular bills and charges received from the ECG meters. He further stated

“The present situation has to end, and I assure my fellow Ghanaians that this too, like other challenges we have faced together, will be fixed”


The Inter Agency task force consists of officials of the PURC, the Energy Commission (EC), the Ministry of Power and ECG, and some others. The purpose of its emergence is for the committee to run tests on the prepaid meters among other things.

According to report, the task force has already started work in the Legon district of the ECG which covers areas such as IPS, American House and School junction, and will extend it further to other parts of the country. Ghanaians are hoping this very discomforting issue is resolved in time and that those affected would be refunded.
